PHYSIOTHERAPY

Prevention and rehabilitation

Our therapist will perform a comprehensive examination that consists of asking questions about your injury, symptoms, and general health, along with a hands-on assessment of your injury or impairment(s). From there, we will make a clinical impression as to what we believe is the cause of your impairment(s). We will then educate you as to what we believe is happening as well as design a treatment plan that we feel will best suit your goals. Treatments can include many different methods as listed below:

Acupuncture is a treatment method used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine disposable needles through the skin and tissues at specific points on the body. It works by stimulating the body to produce natural endorphins.

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is a total system for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic myofascial pain syndromes (long-standing pain when there is no obvious sign of injury or inflammation). This type of pain, often referred to as “neuropathic” pain, is typically due to a nerve malfunction after a minor irritation. The nerves become extremely sensitive and the result is normal signals being exaggerated and mistaken by the brain as pain. These unhealthy nerves can be secondary to common conditions such as spinal arthritis or muscle injury.

IMS treatment uses acupuncture needles to release shortened areas of muscles caused by the overstimulation of supersensitive nerves. If the muscle, and its supplying nerve, are neuropathic the tight muscle will grab the needle producing a cramping sensation. In turn, a receptor in the muscle will initiate a reflex relaxation of the muscle and all other muscles supplied by the same nerve. The most notable side effect of treatment is approximately 24 hours of minor muscle discomfort. The benefits of IMS are cumulative and each treatment with IMS stimulates a certain amount of healing.

When introduced into the tissue, shock waves and pressure waves have effects on a cellular level that are beneficial for healing. Increased blood flow and the formation of new blood vessels create an improved environment for tissue repair. It has further been shown that application of shock waves influences the body’s pain-regulating mechanisms resulting in local pain relief.

PELVIC HEALTH PHYSIOTHERAPY

Compassionate pelvic health care in a supportive environment

It can take time, as well as a trusting relationship with your physiotherapist, to determine the many symptoms and contributing factors of pelvic floor dysfunction. Our appointments and space are structured so that you have the privacy and comfort needed for your assessments and treatments.

Pelvic health Physiotherapy involves internal and external assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles support pelvic organs such as the bladder, colon and uterus. Determining whether the pelvic floor is hypertonic (tight/ poor relaxation) or hypotonic (weak) is important and essential before deciding on the course of treatment.

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy can be divided into several areas:
  • Incontinence: Stress, Urge, and Mixed
  • Pelvic pain: Urge incontinence, Dyspareunia – pain with intercourse, Interstitial Cystitis (Painful Bladder Syndrome), Chronic Prostatitis, Pudendal Neuralgia, Vulvodynia, Vaginismus
  • Constipation
  • Prolapse
  • Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction in pregnancy

A manual examination of the pelvic floor (vaginal and / or rectal) is required to assess the condition of the tissues (skin, nerve, fascia, muscle) to determine the best type of treatment. The determination of whether the pelvic floor is hypertonic (tight/ poor relaxation) or hypotonic (weak) is important.

A stiff, poorly relaxed pelvic floor is often associated with pelvic pain, constipation and some incontinence conditions (urge incontinence). The treatment often involves techniques (manual & exercise) to assist in relaxing these tissues before any strengthening is initiated.

A weak pelvic floor is often associated with prolapse and most incontinence conditions. Pelvic floor strengthening is required to resolve/ optimize these conditions.

Research has indicated that pelvic floor muscle training is the first line of treatment recommended for stress, urge and mixed incontinence in women. Incontinence is not a normal part of ageing nor is it normal to have urinary leakage after childbirth. Urinary incontinence is a treatable condition.

Physiotherapy Associates of Port Perry utilizes Neurotrac technology, as required, to assess the amount and quality of muscle activity, provide biofeedback and/ or muscle stimulation to the pelvic floor muscles.

MASSAGE THERAPY

SOFT TISSUE AND JOINT TREATMENT

Massage Therapy is the assessment and treatment of the soft tissues & joints of the body by manipulation in order to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function, or relieve pain (Massage Therapy Act, 1991). When you come in for a Massage Therapy appointment, your therapist will go over a complete health history, ask questions related to your condition(s), and identify your treatment goals. They may use specific orthopaedic assessments to develop a clinical impression of your impairment(s) before developing a treatment plan and providing you with a massage. Home exercises may also be recommended to help assist you in your healing.

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Radial Pressure Wave Therapy/ShockWave

Radial Pressure Waves or RPW are acoustic waves transmitted into the body via a handpiece and move outward from the point of contact. The transmitter and handpiece are moved throughout treatment to cover the entire pain region.

When introduced into the tissue, shock waves and pressure waves have been shown to affect the body on a cellular level and are beneficial for healing. Increased blood flow and the formation of new blood vessels create an improved environment for tissue repair. It has further been shown that the application of shock waves influences the body’s pain-regulating mechanisms resulting in local pain relief.

Shockwave Therapy has been shown to improve symptoms of the following conditions:

  • Myofascial Trigger Points - localized tender or painful area
  • Plantar Fasciitis - inflamed tendon across the sole of the foot
  • Chronic Tendinopathies - swollen, painful tendons, for example:
    • golfer’s/tennis elbow
    • Achilles tendinopathy
    • shoulder/rotator cuff tendinopathy
